I want to share why I am putting together a Youth Civic & Community Leadership Team — and more importantly, what I hope you will get out of being part of it.
This is not just about helping with an election. I want this to be an opportunity for you to learn, explore, create, serve and lead while getting a firsthand understanding of the community you call home.
Get a behind-the-scenes understanding of how our City Council, city services, commissions, elections and local government work.
Learn why local elections matter, how residents can participate, and how you can make a difference in your community even before you are old enough to vote.
When appropriate, join me during door-to-door outreach and hear directly from people about the issues, opportunities and challenges they see in their neighborhoods.
Volunteering shouldn't just be about collecting a certain number of hours. It should be about seeing a need and asking, “What can I do to help?”
Spend time with seniors, listen to their stories, help with technology or gardening, take a walk with them, or simply have a conversation. At the same time, you may discover that they have advice, experiences and perspectives that can help you too. Both generations benefit.
Work together to identify meaningful ways young people can contribute to Cupertino — during the campaign and long after the election is over.
Bring your creativity to Instagram, Facebook and other platforms. Help develop ideas, photos, videos, stories and engaging content. This is an opportunity to learn how modern digital communication and social media campaigns work — while having fun doing it!
Learn how to listen, communicate respectfully, work as a team, understand different perspectives and confidently share your ideas.
We will not be involved in negative campaigning, personal attacks or criticizing other candidates. Our focus will be on what we believe in, what we want to contribute and how we can make Cupertino better.
Whether you are in middle school, high school, college or just starting your journey beyond school, there is something you can bring to this team — your ideas, your creativity, your energy and your perspective.
This is not just about an election. It is about learning how our community works, discovering how you can serve others, connecting generations, developing your leadership skills and having a great experience with friends along the way.
